RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Our purpose in Religious Education is to present and explain the beliefs of the Catholic Church to children and their families. We will prepare and enable each child to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, Holy Eucharist, and Confirmation. We will encourage children and their families to participate in weekly Mass, develop a strong prayer life and equip them to carry their faith with them as they go about their lives.

Our Catechists and volunteers partner with and assist parents, the first and primary teachers of the faith, in the Catholic formation of their children, by leading them to nurture the faith of their children and to show them the love of the Lord.

Our mission is the same as that of Christ and his Church: to bring about the kingdom of God – a kingdom of peace, justice, and communion, and a kingdom where all will know that they are worthy of the love of God.

Preschool/Kindergarten

Designed to introduce our very young students to the love of Jesus Christ and their Catholic faith, our Preschool/Kindergarten tuition-based program, meets on Sundays, September through Holy Week.  Students should be self-sufficient in their restroom needs and have the ability to participate in structured learning for a 60 minute period of time.  The class coincides with our 11:00 am Mass and is held in Marian Hall.

1st – 8th Grade

The Office of Faith Formation West at St. Cornelius offers traditional weekly tuition based Catholic education experience.  We provide a comprehensive approach to the faith development of our students by utilizing textbook and Catechetical resources that meet each student’s unique learning style. Students in grades 1st through 8th gather every week, September through Holy Week.  All classes take place at St. Cornelius in the Sanctuary, Narthex and attached halls.  Our Religious Educational plan and its implementation are outlined in detail in the Office of Faith Formation West Family Handbook.

Sacramental Preparation

Preparation for the First Celebration and Reception of the Sacrament of Eucharist is conducted within the weekly classroom setting for students in the 2nd grade.  This includes instruction in receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Our First Communion Mass and celebration happens in the spring, usually during the Easter season.

The Celebration and Reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation is held in the spring of the student’s 8th-grade year.  Students will prepare weekly throughout the Religious Education season.  Students are required to attend a Confirmation retreat which is held in fall. Please see the Confirmation Requirements document to view all necessary paperwork and coursework for the Sacrament of Confirmation.
